- 28 Aug 2026dronesNight of 28 August: long-range SBU drones (special unit "Alpha") attacked the Engels-2 strategic aviation airbase near Saratov, flying some 800 km — a Tu-95MS strategic bomber, an ammunition depot and a fuel-and-lubricants storage were hit, and a fire broke out on the airfield. The strike was confirmed by Ukraine's General Staff and Volodymyr Zelensky; satellite imagery reported by The Insider shows a burnt-out Tu-95MS with a wing torn off. Residents of Engels and Saratov reported a series of explosions, and monitoring channels published videos of the attack. Engels hosts the Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers used for missile strikes on Ukraine; this is the second bomber hit by the SBU in recent months — the previous Tu-95MS was damaged on 17 July.
